Who We Are

We are the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale (SACOS), a limited liability oil and gas organization and a subsidiary of SAB Holding Group. SACOS was founded in 2006 in Amman, Jordan through some of its predecessors.

SACOS owns a Concession Agreement with the Jordanian Government represented by the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources (MEMR) for the surface retorting of the Jordanian Oil shale with an expected production lifetime of 40 years.

The shale oil production project is executed through the concession agreement terms and conditions on two main phases, the Pre-Development Phase (ongoing phase) and the Development Phase.

SACOS’ business is the surface retorting and commercial production of oil shale in Jordan. Where the shale oil we plan to produce should contribute to achieving economic growth and sustainable development in Jordan, by producing shale oil and by-products in commercial quantities.

SACOS also concentrates on the production of oil with minimal impact on the environment and the other natural resources like water. This comes due to our integral respect for the environment.

Attarat Project

The Attarat project is the main running project of SACOS, the project is currently being executed, while several activities toward achieving project success have been conducted and implemented in order to achieve the required annual objectives and plans that shall be concluded in the production and selling of shale oil for Jordan and/or international market.

Based on the outcome of the BFS, SACOS will start the Development and Production Phase of Retorted Shale Oil. This phase will extend to 40 years.

The project in Attarat Umm Ghudran involves the surface retorting of oil shale. SACOS is expected to build a commercial-sized plant, which will utilize the SAB Oil-developed breakthrough technology in the oil shale surface retorting industry.

The Attarat project is being developed through two main phases, the first of which is the four-year Pre-Development Phase that began in 2015 and entails conducting detailed technical, engineering, environmental and feasibility studies. This stage will be followed by a 40-year Development and Production Phase, which is expected to commence in 2022 with an initial oil output of 9,000 barrels/day, ramping up to a production capacity of 30,000 oil barrels/day by 2028.

Furthermore, SACOS has completed the preliminary feasibility study and is currently conducting a detailed feasibility study.

Charity Iftar for Orphans on the Holy month of Ramadan

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for oil shale held a charity Iftar for a group of 500 children on the Holy month of Ramadan. The Iftar which was put together with a Jordanian Charity along with a group of the company’s team & some volunteers.
The event included a range of recreational activities & competitions for the children that brought joy to their warm hearts on this blessed month. This activity comes from the company’s true belief to continue to serve & develop Jordanians, knowing that they will help in building & protecting this country.

The official opening of the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale

The CEO & Chairman of SACOS, Eng. Sami Al-Bakri, along with a group of directors & board members & oil shale specialists inaugurated the new offices of the company, that is located in Amman, Jordan on May 8th, 2018.
During the visit, Eng. Sami AlBakri visited several important business events and strategic meetings with the President of the company and board member, Eng. Hashim Thallab, the staff, and experts as well. Also discussed, was the workflow of the project of surface retorting in Al-Attarat. Proving that this investment will help in the Jordanian economic growth, believing in the community and having faith in their abilities.
In addition to the role, the company has given for effective development as well as the sustainable development projects to Jordan.

Training Day about time management in an organization & everyday life

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale has organized a training day about managing time effectively during work & our daily activities.
The training specialist helped the team to absorb & use time management programs so that the team can organize and achieve future goals effectively & before meeting deadlines.

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale organizes a training day for its team with their family members at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, the Dead Sea on the 5th of April 2018.

The training was done by a consultant & specialist along with a group of team members, aiming to develop a spirit of cooperation & teamwork.
This training comes from the vision of SACOS in regards to the interest of the management to develop the skills of teamwork on an ongoing basis. As there has also been some discussions & dialogues among the team members to develop the working environment in the company & their interpersonal relations.

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shales’ new offices in Amman

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale Ltd. has moved to its new offices on November 11, 2017, locating in the 3rd circle, in the Middle East Insurance Building on the 8th floor, in Amman Jordan.

SACOS develops new technology to extract shale oil from oil shale in Jordan

On the 20th of August, 2017, the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale held a technical presentation for the extraction of oil shale with the presence of His excellency the Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources, Dr Saleh AlKharabsheh.

Approval of two concession agreements for oil shale surface retorting

In the meeting, the committee approved the amended law for the ratification of the concession agreement for the surface retorting of oil shale between the government represented by the Natural Resources authority & the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale for the year 2017.

The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale participated in Supporting the Annual Section of the (Jerusalem is an Arab City) held by the Jordanian Geologists Association for the new members joining.

The ceremony was held under the patronage of His Excellency, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources Dr Saleh AlKharabsheh, & the head of the Jordanian Geologists Association, Mr Sakher AlNsour & many other honours and excellencies in the country, as well as some members of the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale. Including Mr Basel AlQaraa & the Geologist Jumana Abu Hawas.
SACOS received a ceremonial shield at the end of the successful event, having discussed associative and training matters.
The Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale also cooperated with the Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources in supporting any activity regarding the Jordanian Geologists Association.

The concession agreement for the exploitation of oil shale in Al-Lujun & Al- Attarat Umm Ghudran

The Ministry of Energy & Mineral Resources signed on Wednesday, 2014 a 40- year concession agreement with the Saudi Arabian Corporation for Oil Shale Ltd. (SACOS) to exploit shale oil by surface retorting to produce oil in the Lajun and Al-Attarat Umm Ghudran region in Jordan.
